Coming up this weekend is Boishakhi Mela 1417 – the celebration of the Bangla New Year. Boishakhi Mela is celebrated in Bengali communities all over the world. The L.A. celebration takes place at Shatto Park, just two blocks south of L.A. Eco-Village.
The celebration features great food, music, marketplace, and more. I happened upon this event a couple years ago, by accident, and I recommend folks go and check it out.
L.A. Eco-Village is located in a very mixed, very demographically diverse neighborhood. Since I moved here in 1996, the area has been predominantly Central American (Salvadorean, Nicaraguan, Honduran, Oaxacan and others) and Korean. In recent years we’ve seen an influx of immigrants from Bangladesh.
Boishakhi Mela 1417 will take place from 10am to 10pm on Saturday and Sunday May 22nd and 23rd at Shatto Recreation Center. The address is 3191 West 4th Street, L.A. 90020. You can rsvp and get basic event info at the event page on Facebook.
